Ceremony honors slain NYPD detectives
The NYPD on Tuesday honored two detectives who were fatally shot in Brooklyn two years ago.
NYPD officials and family members gathered at the Christ Tabernacle Church in Queens for a ceremony honoring detectives Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were gunned down in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn on Dec. 20, 2014.
Both officers were taking part in an anti-terrorism drill when they were shot execution-style inside their patrol car. Other officers immediately went after the suspect, who killed himself at a nearby subway station.
Detective Liu was 32 years old and a seven-year veteran of the NYPD. He and his wife were married only two months when he was killed.
Detective Ramos was 40 years old and had worked for the NYPD for two years. Ramos left behind a wife and two sons.
Both men are buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Maritza Ramos, the widow of Detective Ramos, has started a foundation in her husband's honor that supports families of fallen officers and fosters betters relationships between law enforcement and the community.
