A Bronx councilman is calling for netting to be installed at Yankee Stadium after a young girl was injured by a foul ball Wednesday.
The girl was hit by a 105 mph foul ball that came off the bat of Todd Frazier. The game was delayed for nearly five minutes while crews went to help her. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK, but the incident has sparked calls for protective netting to be installed at the stadium.
Councilman Rafael Espinal has been advocating for the netting and believes it needs to be added sooner rather than later. He says anything that protects the fans needs to be implemented.
Espinal says it was very disheartening to watch another fan get hit by a foul ball, especially since it could have been avoided if there was netting. He says the Mets have the netting and feels the team's plan to protect the fans should be used as a model.
Espinal says his initial bill called for placing the netting all the way to the foul ball poles. He says the Yankees organization needs to determine if that would work or if the netting should be set up differently. He adds that the netting is 99 percent invisible.
The councilman hopes the netting becomes a reality soon before another fan gets hurt.
