An embattled Bridgeport nursing home and its owner are subjects of a federal grand jury investigation, News 12 has confirmed.
The Bridgeport Health Care Center, on Bond Street near Bullard-Havens High School, has had its share of troubles over the past three years -- ranging from late pay checks to vanishing retirement accounts.
A Justice Department subpoena says there is an ongoing federal grand jury investigation into a possible felony. Federal agents raided the facility two weeks ago, filling a moving truck full of boxes, safes and file cabinets.
Investigators were tight-lipped at the time, but thanks to the search warrant released Friday, it's now clear that they were looking for evidence of money laundering; wire, mail and health care fraud; theft or embezzlement; tax evasion and falsely filed tax returns.
Agents from the FBI, IRS and Labor Department also raided the owner's home in New York City. His name is Chaim Stern.
Stern's attorneys expect criminal indictments to come down in the case. But his lawyers have also accused the government of using "scorched earth" tactics.
"We are all hoping for -- and expecting -- justice," says Sherrie Weller, a union rep for workers at the nursing home.
