Transit workers were out across New York City Saturday clearing switches and elevated tracks of snow.
The MTA yard on Shell Road in Gravesend saw high snow drifts due to the wind, and employees made sure none of the workers clearing the snow were affected by the freezing temperatures.
John Chiarello, of TWU Local 100, tells News 12 that some yards saw 8- to 10-foot drifts, with frigid temperatures and ice complicating the cleanup.
"The proper attire is important, taking the proper rest in between the work and making sure that we have enough forces to reinforce people when they take their breaks," says New York City Transit acting President Phillip Eng.
Workers say they want to remind straphangers of the important job they do to keep those who ride the rails safe.
