Cuomo: Out-of-state National Guard troops coming to NY
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at a news conference this morning that more than 850 out-of-state National Guard troops are coming to New York to help with the response effort to Superstorm Sandy.Flanked by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and various other officials from around the state, Cuomo said that as recovery efforts continue, New Yorkers can expect the gas shortage to last several more days.He says more than 700,000 residents around the state remained without power as of this morning, nearly one week after Sandy walloped the area. That outage number is down from about 2.1 million New Yorkers who lost their electricity. With many residents returning to work tomorrow, the MTA will face it's first test since Sandy struck last Monday. The governor says that service will not be normal and it's important to map out routes before entering the system. FEMA administrator Craig Furgate said at the news conference that 86,000 households have already applied for recovery funding, and FEMA has already deposited $97 million into the accounts of applicants.
