A well-known Danbury dog trainer who was accused of animal cruelty died by suicide Friday.
Danbury police say they responded to the home of Eddie Simon Thursday and found 15 dogs living in poor conditions.
They say he was issued a court summons and agreed to turn over all dogs to animal control. He was charged with 15 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty
For years, Simon was known as "Eddie the Dog Guy,” a self-proclaimed dog whisperer who focused on training dogs with behavioral problems.
However, a social media campaign led by animal activists launched recently against Simon after those who used his services claimed their dogs came back from his care in poor health. Some clients say their pets have even died in his care.
Police returned to Simon’s home Friday following a call from someone concerned about his well-being, but he was not there.
“The Bethel police were called by the Danbury police to assist them to attempt to locate somebody that was danger to himself,” said Capt. Stephen Pugner.

Police tracked Simon to Pawloski Lumber in Bethel where they say he shot and killed himself.
Officers say they are working to get the dogs taken by animal control back in their homes.
