Defense, prosecution argue whether teen intended to drag NYPD officer with car
The trial is underway for a teenager accused of dragging an NYPD officer with a stolen car and nearly killing him.
Justin Murrel, 16, is charged with attempted murder.
In the opening statements, both the prosecution and defense focused on the same thing – Murrel's intentions.
The defense is not questioning what happened or the result, but whether Murrel intentionally tried to kill Officer Dalshe Veve.
Prosecutors argued that he absolutely did try to kill the officer – saying Murrel made clear-minded, deliberate choices to speed upward of 50 mph and swerve to shake him off.
Defense attorneys say there was no way for him to know Veve would hold on, and what happened was an unintended consequence.
Prosecutors say Murrel was behind the wheel of a stolen car in East Flatbush last June. They say he fled when Veve approached him, dragging the officer for 2 1/2 blocks. Veve was put into a coma and remained in rehab for nearly a year.
Sources say Veve still has to undergo extensive therapy. He still can't speak in full sentences or walk under his own power.
Veve's fellow police officers vow to show their support in the courtroom until the trial is over.
