Even though Domestic Violence Awareness Month has drawn to a close, sergeants across the city are reminding residents that it is an issue that happens all year long.

Every precinct and housing bureau police service area has its own Domestic Violence Unit (DVU.) These officers follow up on every domestic violence call, check on victims, repeat offenders and ensure families are connected with all the resources they need.

A newer system called the "Top Offender Database" keeps a list of the worst domestic violence offenders. This includes people who have been arrested three times within an 18-month period.

"I think it gives supervisors and investigators a bigger tool to look at to know who to target and to know who you should be investing more of your time and resources into," Det. Corinne McLenna, NYPD Chief of Department, DV Unit. "And I'm not saying we're taking away from any of our other victims or offenders but these are our high priorities and these are the people that were going after more aggressively.”
