DOT: Overhaul of BQE to begin in 2024
The city is promising to repair a 1.5-mile stretch of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street.
The work will include the triple-decker cantilever near the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.
The Department of Transportation recently announced the results of a study that found the stretch of road was in slightly better shape than expected. But the findings also called for construction to start within 10 to 12 years to ensure long-term safety.
The DOT plans to begin construction on the $1.7 billion project in 2024 and complete work by 2029. The plan also calls for keeping several lanes open during construction, but residents are worried that the work will impact traffic anyway.
Most of the funding will come from the city, but the state has refused to kick in additional funding despite urging from local elected officials.
