DUMBO carousel's future uncertain
Families in DUMBO say a carousel in the neighborhood would be a welcome treat. What many don't know is that there's already one there.
Inside a DUMBO warehouse, Jane Walentas keeps a 1920s-era carousel she bought from an amusement park in Ohio with her husband David, a well-known neighborhood developer.
Walentas says she's been working nearly two decades to get it restored and hopes to place it in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
"The carousel was bought for that site between the bridges on the river," says Walentas. "The idea was to see the Manhattan skyline and two bridges while you're on the carousel."
But as city plans for the park have evolved, the future of the merry-go-round has stalled. Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation representatives say they're very interested in putting the carousel there, but decisions on when and where haven't been made.
"It just breaks my heart that this is here and nothing is happening," says Walentas.
Last summer, Walentas kept the warehouse open to the public so families could come see the carousel. She says she's been getting numerous phone calls from residents and is considering doing the same thing this summer.
