Family receives NYCHA repairs day after being told of 1-year wait
A Brooklyn family says NYCHA told them the wait to fix a gaping hole in their kitchen wall will be nearly a year -- but lucked out when workers showed up to fix the problem Wednesday.
Tanisha Crawford lives in the Albany Houses apartment with her 5-year-old son and her mother.
She says the family was living with the open hole and a temporary plastic sink for two months.
"Apparently a leak was into the wall," Crawford says. "So they took apart the wall and sink and then left and never returned to close the hole."
She says she called maintenance multiple times to no avail. Then mice started creeping in through the opening.
"Yesterday they told me there was 3,000 people ahead of me, and there were no appointments 'til September 2017," Crawford says. "It makes it seem like we don't matter."
But the family reached out to News 12, and NYCHA workers arrived Wednesday at the family's doorstep.
NYCHA blamed the delay on a mistake. Workers say the new sink should be installed by Thursday.
