The Soundview Ferry, which has been up and running for a couple of months now, gives its employees an opportunity to channel their love of the water into a career.
Jeffton Harrison grew up in Jamaica, where water played a central role in his upbringing.
Harrison moved to the Bronx 25 years ago, and after holding different customer service jobs, he found a job as a deckhand for NYC Ferries.
“Whatever job I was doing I’d be near the water, either working near it or taking my breaks there,” he says.

Commuters can find Harrison on the Soundview route, one of six ferry routes that shuffle commuters between Clason and Wall Street.
“I was always looking for my niche in this world and realizing I was always being drawn to the water,” he says.
Harrison says that whenever he gets time off, he goes along one of the routes with his daughter “just to float.”
