Halachic Organ Donor Society Walk held at Marine Park
The Halachic Organ Donor Society Walk was held in Marine Park Sunday; its goal is to educate the Jewish community about organ donation.
The Halachic Organ Donor Society, or HODS, says most Jewish people don't donate organs because they believe Judaism forbids it.
As a result, the community says Jewish people have one of the lowest organ donor registration rates among ethnic groups around the world.
Jewish doctors, organ donors and organ recipients gathered at the walk to try to get the word out that it is OK to donate their organs to save a life.
Sarah Bezalely, 15, is grateful for a kidney transplant she received from her dad and a heart transplant she received from a donor.
"She really needed organs to survive," said Tamar Bezalely, Sarah's mom. "We needed to rely on a generous donor."
HODS says that they've helped save more than 200 lives by facilitating transplants that would not have otherwise happened.
