Commuting to work just got a little easier for some of the staff at Coney Island Hospital.
The hospital received a bicycle donation for their hard work during the coronavirus pandemic.
Throughout the pandemic, food and personal protection equipment have been donated to health care workers to thank them for being on the frontlines, but on Thursday 20 staff members walked away with brand-new bikes.
The bikes, along with the helmet and locks, were donated by the bicycle company Huffy and is part of an initiative by Lyft, the Department of Transportation, The Economic Development Corporation, and Councilmember Mark Treyger to give back to the health care workers during this difficult time.
The bikes were given to workers who signed up for the donations on a first come, first served basis.

The staff also got the chance to test out their new bikes by riding around the hospital.
Treyger says he wants the workers to know that the community is supportive of them at this time.

"There are folks who generally might have issues getting to work, getting to work safely. I think that this is just really a great token of appreciation to say that we care about your wellness, your well-being,” said Treyger.
News 12 is told that all of the partners in the initiative are planning more bike donations to other hospitals in the coming weeks.
