Gov. Andrew Cuomo's third term will have something he's never had in office before: Democratic control of both the state Assembly and state Senate.
Led by six election victories on Long Island, Democrats took control of the state Senate. Newly elected state legislators will take office in January.
"I don't think there's going to be this Democrat way of doing things," says Suffolk Democratic Party Chairman Rich Schaffer. "It'll be an Andrew Cuomo way of doing things."
Schaffer says Cuomo wants to maintain his image as a moderate Democrat and won't let a more liberal agenda dominate the legislative session.
"I think Andrew Cuomo has shown that he's one of the best -- if not the best -- at being able to fashion a compromise to get people to do what needs to be done on a moderate level," says Schaffer.
Cuomo vowed during the campaign that he would serve a full term and not run for president in 2020. But many believe he is eyeing a run for the White House. It's familiar territory for a Cuomo – Mario Cuomo twice flirted with presidential runs but instead ran for a fourth term as governor and lost.
"This whole gubernatorial campaign was batting practice for running against Trump," says political analyst Mike Dawidziak. He believes Cuomo will seek the White House. He says no matter who the candidate, winning a fourth term as governor is always a longshot.
"He is a student of politics," says Dawidziak. "He is a political animal. He knows he's got to move. He knows there's no downside to running for president. It's time to go, time to move and he knows that."
