Judge deciding whether to extend halt on church demolition
A Brooklyn judge is deciding whether to extend an injunction to stop a century-old, vacant Brownsville church from being demolished.
Built by Italian immigrants, Our Lady of Loreto Church on Sackman Street has fallen into disrepair since being shuttered eight years ago.
Its property owners, Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Brooklyn, are seeking to raze the church in favor of affordable housing units.
The Brownsville Cultural Coalition would rather see the property turned into a space for arts and culture. Preserving the aging structure would cost close to $9 million, according to Catholic Charities.
The judge is expected to hand down her decision in a couple weeks.
