Lawsuit filed over Patsy Grimaldi's new pizzeria
The owner of the famed Grimaldi?s Pizzeria is suing the restaurant?s namesake in an attempt to stop him from reopening a shop down the block.
Frank Ciolli bought the Grimaldi?s shop and name 14 years ago from Patsy Grimaldi. After a rent dispute with his former landlord, Ciolli moved his pizzeria down the block.
The 81-year-old Grimaldi now plans to open Juliana's Pizza at the old storefront.
According to the New York Post, Ciolli says the new pizzeria would create 'unfair competition.' A lawyer for Grimaldi says Patsy sold the business back in 1998 with a 10-year non-compete clause. Since the clause is expired, there should be nothing stopping Grimaldi from setting up shop at the old storefront.
It could take the judge anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to rule on the case. In the meantime, Juliana's Pizzeria is allowed to open for business.
