A man was found dead Tuesday morning at Railroad Park in Melrose, police say.
A passerby called 911 after discovering the man's body at Railroad Park between East 161st Street and Courtlandt Avenue.
Neighbors tell News 12 that the man was homeless and that he was often seen sleeping on park benches. The city says its outreach teams are working around the clocks and its efforts have doubled to help the homeless population find somewhere warm to stay amid the cold weather. Temperatures had dipped below freezing overnight.
The city's Department of Homeless Services says so far this year it has activated a code blue alert for the extreme cold every day except for Jan. 4. They say 84 homeless people have been placed in shelters over the past 15 days, but are still urging residents to call 311 to report any homeless person in need of housing.
The DHS says as far as they know there have been no reported deaths among the homeless in the Bronx due to frigid temperatures.
Police say there were no physical signs of trauma to the body.
The city's medical examiner is working to determine the official cause of death.
