The Coney Island Development Corporation canceled a public informational meeting Monday that was designed to discuss plans for Coney Island's future.

Developers cited an unforseen amount of people as the reason it canceled the meeting. They said it was an RSVP-only meeting, and the CDC printed letters explaining the cancellation was a public safety issue.

State Senator Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn) was scheduled to attend with other critics of the development proposal.

Mayor Bloomberg is backing the plans that city officials said will revitalize Coney Island. The proposal calls for rezoning the area into three districts and adding an outdoor skating rink, retail and residential space to Coney Island's existing structures.

The mayor said the development will take advantage of underused lands, but critics worry that the city could push the current landowners out of business.

Officials said the plan could take more than 10 years to complete if approved.
