New Jersey State Police are holding an event this weekend that they hope can provide closure to some New Jersey families who are missing loved ones.
Families of people who have gone missing in the state are asked to attend the “Missing in New Jersey” event at Rowan University Saturday. Families should bring items to help identify loved ones, such as photographs, fingerprints, dental records or X-rays. The family members may also give DNA samples to be checked against a national database.
State police say that there are more than 1,000 people listed as “long-term missing” in New Jersey. Many of these cases have gone cold. Officials say that they hope an event like this can help solve some cases.
New Jersey resident Tammy Csaszar attended the first “Missing in New Jersey” event last year. The materials she provided helped identify the remains of her missing brother.
“He’s finally home. He’s not the way we wanted him, but he’s finally here,” she says.
Detective Sgt. Joel Trella says that this event is also designed to bring the families of missing loved ones together. He says that there aren’t many emotional resources available for the families and the event is a way for those mourning to interact with people who know what they are going through.
State police are also encouraging undocumented citizens to attend the event. They say that they are not interested in a person’s legal status, but just want to help them find their missing loved ones.
“Missing in New Jersey” will be held Saturday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Rowan University in Glassboro. Admission is free.
