More cooling towers decontaminated amid Legionnaires' outbreak
Health officials say 10 locations that have tested positive for Legionnaires' disease have been decontaminated.
Over the weekend, Mayor de Blasio announced five new sites that tested positive for the presence of the Legionella bacteria. However, de Blasio says that it does not appear that anyone contracted Legionnaires' disease from those locations.
The infected towers include; the New York City Housing Court on the Grand Concourse, the Bronx Hall of Justice, Samuel Gompers High School on Southern Boulevard, the Verizon building at 1106 Hoe Ave., and 554 Grand Concourse. The Grand Councourse location is the site of an old post office.
The most recent totals show 109 cases of Legionnaires' disease in the Bronx. Of those cases, 94 people have been hospitalized, 76 have been treated and released and 10 have died from the disease.
Inspectors are continuing their testing at a state mobile command center at Hostos Community College in the Bronx. Health officials say that they believe the outbreak is coming to an end.
De Blasio iintroduced today his new legislation aimed at reducing an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the future.
For building owners and landlords, the state is offering free testing. Anyone interested in the test is asked to call 1-888-769-7243 to set up an appointment, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
