Multiple muggings leave Park Slope women on edge
Multiple muggings have left some women on edge as they walk around the usually quiet neighborhood of Park Slope.
"We're very concerned because I think we all assume this neighborhood is very safe," says resident Louis Rosen. "Walking around at night isn't something we generally fear."
Police say muggers have been targeting women near Eighth Avenue and Prospect Park West for the past few weeks. On Sunday, police arrested two suspects believed to be responsible for at least one robbery.
"This is not a crime spree," says 78th Precinct Deputy Inspector John Argenziano. "We had a couple of bag snatches, a number of robberies in December, but everything's under control."
However, statistics show robberies jumped 33 percent in December, although they were down 12 percent overall last year.
The 78th Precinct has increased patrols of uniformed and plainclothes officers in Park Slope, which has the lowest crime rates in the borough.
