#N12BK: Don’t get burned by expensive sunscreen
Confused about which sunscreen to buy and how much to spend? You're not alone.
As summer quickly approaches, anyone who's even taken a trip to the pharmacy will soon embark on an adventure through what seems like an endless aisle of sunscreen lotion.
There are lotions for your face and body, sprays, and even sticks.
Which is the best sunscreen to use and what do all of the claims and statements written on the bottle mean?
According to Consumer Reports, Roopal V. Kundu, M.D., an associate professor of dermatology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, researches how people buy and use sunscreen, and he says, "It's really hard to make sense of what all the terminology means."
Consumer Reports says the federal government requires sunscreen claims to be "truthful and not misleading." But only three of the main claims consumers see—"SPF," "broad-spectrum," and "water-resistant"—are strictly regulated by the government and therefore have agreed-upon definitions.
Consumer Reports has rated 73 different kinds of lotions, and based on some testing, it wants to make sure people don't get burned at the checkout counter or on the beach this summer.
