A Long Island Rail Road train has been idling loudly at the old Center Moriches train station for at least the past two weeks, frustrated neighbors tell News 12.
David Delong, a neighbor to the train station, says the smell of diesel is potent in the air in the surrounding community. He says the sound of the idling train can be heard 24/7.
The old Center Moriches station has been closed for about 20 years.
News 12 observed that every few minutes the train’s air brakes would cause a loud popping sound.
Delong told News 12 that he called the LIRR, but received no answers as to why it was idling or what was going to be done about it.
An LIRR spokesperson said the train has been idling since Sunday to aid in work in the area and the LIRR received only one complaint. The spokesperson added in a statement that, “The Long Island Rail Road strives to be a good neighbor as we take on an unprecedented amount of work across the system to modernize and transform our infrastructure while improving the customer experience."
By late afternoon Friday, the LIRR said it had turned off the train’s engine. Neighbors in the area confirmed that it was no longer running.
