New playground opens in Bensonhurst
A new playground was opened at P.S. 205 in Bensonhurst Friday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The opening of the playground, which features a new track and a basketball court, is part of the city's plan to convert 266 schoolyards into open spaces geared toward children's recreation.
"It's a safe place for them to exercise in a society that is very sedentary," says Sister Rose Harvey, vice president of the Trust and Public Land.
Mayor Bloomberg says the goal is to ensure that every New Yorker is within a 10-minute walk from a public park or a playground; the city is investing $95 million to make it a reality.
