NYPD marks 5 years since death of detective in Coney Island fire
The NYPD held a memorial Tuesday marking five years since the death of Detective Dennis Guerra.
He died on April 9, 2014 – three days after responding to a fire at a Coney Island housing development.
News 12 reported that Guerra succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning and the effects of smoke inhalation when he and his partner ran into a burning building on Surf Avenue.
Marcell, a teenager who lived in the building at the time, confessed to starting the fire because he was bored. He was eventually convicted of murder in the case and sentenced to 19 years to life in prison.
Top NYPD officials were on hand to remember Guerra's sacrifice and keep a promise they made to the family.
“It's important for us to be there with the families,” says Terence Monahan, the NYPD’s chief of department. “…That's why everyone from the department comes in to spend time with the family to let them know we are always there for them.”
Guerra was remembered as a man who loved cars, barbecuing and his job.
