The NYPD is encouraging New Yorkers to take common sense precautions this Memorial Day weekend, especially for those going to parks or beaches.
On Thursday, officials provided an update for their weekend plans. They say beaches will be open, but swimming will not be allowed.
The NYPD says the Parks Department will be patrolling the sand to make sure people are complying with regulations.
Wading in water up to a person's ankles will be allowed, but the city says lifeguards will not be on duty, so nobody can go into the water beyond that.
Those on the sand will be asked to avoid crowding and maintain a distance.
The NYPD also says their force will be supplemented by school safety agents who are also available since school is out.
The NYPD says it doesn't plan to be taking enforcement action or issuing summonses during patrols, but criminal violations will be enforced.
