It was a heartwarming reunion Wednesday for NYC Health + Hospitals Kings County staff and their patients celebrating Patient Experience Week.

Leon Layne was just one of many patients happy to be back at the facility. He had surgery in 2017 after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He initially refused the procedure.

“I'm here today because of Dr. Andrew Winer," he said. “He took me by the hand and led me to the end of the tunnel and there was light.”

Layne is now cancer-free.

"A young strapping healthy young guy like him, we want him living until 100,” said Dr. Winer. “We need more people like him in this world.”

The event gave health care staff and patients an opportunity to share stories, some food and build meaningful relationships.
