Police: Man accused of shooting 5-year-old in custody
The suspected gunman behind the shooting of a 5-year-old Bronx boy has been taken into police custody, according to officials.
Chief Robert Boyce confirmed through a tweet that the suspect was taken into custody shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Boyce says officers were working several leads when they took the man into custody near the area where the shooting took place.
The shooting happened just after 5 p.m. Monday outside of 1139 Washington Ave. as the child was celebrating his birthday.
Police say Jaheen Hunter is in grave condition. They say he was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital by his family before being transferred to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
Police say Hunter's father was walking him to a waiting car when a man in his 20s fired at least four shots at another man in the same area.
The 27-year-old suspect from the Bronx has not been identified however, police say he has 10 prior arrests including assault, criminal possession of a weapon and drug possession.
