Police say a man has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal stabbing of a Department of Education employee.
The incident happened around 7 a.m. Thursday inside a ground-floor apartment at 877 Bay Ridge Ave., where officers responded to a call of an altercation in progress.
Once at the scene, police say they found the victim with multiple stab wounds to the chest. Investigators say the suspect's mother and daughter were in the apartment at the time and were being questioned by police. They also say a knife was recovered at the scene.
News 12 is told the victim was a 52-year-old woman who neighbors say was renting a room from the 42-year-old suspect's mother.
The suspect was in the hospital Thursday night, police say.
Regarding the slain DOE worker, city schools Chancellor Carmen Farina released a statement saying, "We have lost a valued member of our community in this tragedy and we mourn with her family."
The DOE says grief counseling will be available to staff as they process what happened.
Because the NYPD says it is still notifying the victim's family, News 12 is not yet releasing her name.
