Police: Woman dies after mini school bus hit-and-run in Unionport
Police say a woman is dead after being hit by a school bus earlier this morning in Unionport.
The incident occurred on Havemeyer and Story avenues.
News 12 is told the woman was transferred to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.
News 12 obtained video of the incident, which shows the 68-year-old victim using the crosswalk just before impact.
Police say a call came in just before 10 a.m. An eyewitness says she saw a woman get hit by a mini school bus. She says the school bus then took off.
A man at the scene told News 12 he ran over to check on the woman after she was hit.
"We were traveling home on Story Avenue, and we witnessed a couple vehicles in the street. We weren't sure what was going on. I opened up my passenger door and realized there was an elderly woman lying in the middle of the street unattended,” says Charles Pattee. “I exited my vehicle and went over to help her, and she had a faint pulse and I asked what had happened. A witness who claims she saw what happened said that a small yellow school bus struck the woman and just kept going."
Police have not released any information about a possible suspect or the victim's name.
