Dozens of Stratford kids are learning how to ice skate with the help of a program organized by the local police department.

The Stratford Police Activities League, or PAL, held its "Learn to Skate and Play Hockey Program" at Shelton Sports Center.

Organizers say 26 kids took part in the program, which makes an expensive sport available to families who might not otherwise get to play.

"Twin Rinks here in Shelton has been great to us, working with us as far as setting up our league, giving us the ice time, been super-supportive of our program, supporting our kids," says Stratford Police Officer Kevin Albohn. "They're all skating around, playing with pucks, shooting on goal – you can see their confidence is up which is great, too."

The hockey program began July 8 and runs through September.
