A national program is helping to locate missing people in New Jersey.
Project Lifesaver helps police and first responders locate the elderly or children with disabilities who are prone to wandering off. It does this through a GPS bracelet the person wears.
Marion Gwizdz says that her father suffers from dementia. He is part of the program.
“My dad went out in August, in the middle of the night, and walked two miles not knowing where he was,” she says.
Thanks to the program, the father was found that night and was not hurt.
The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office is praising the program. Captain Mark Szczecina says that on Oct. 30 his team was looking for a missing person in Franklin Township, when another call for a missing person also came in. Szczecina says that both people were located in under an hour.
"I’ve been here 26 years and that has never happened,” he says. "With this were talking minutes. I found that one person with Somerville basically within minutes just from the call. The whole night we had two searches in under an hour."
Somerset County currently has 47 people signed up for Project Lifesaver. It's free to residents, and officials say they have room for more clients. More information about the program can be found HERE.
