Racial tensions flair over Fort Greene Park closing times
Residents say Fort Greene Park's two different closing times are a form of racial discrimination.
AJ Newton says his Father's Day barbecue was cut short after a park official kicked his family out of because it was getting too late. Newton lives on the north side of the park near Myrtle Avenue, which is surrounded by two NYCHA complexes.
Newton says the north side of the park has a closing time of 9 p.m. The other side of the park, surrounded by a predominantly white neighborhood, has a closing time of 1 a.m.
A Parks Department spokesperson says the 9 p.m. curfew applies only to the barbecue area and that signs stating the curfew have been in the area for three or four years.
