Rally demands charges against officer in Garner death
Hundreds of people gathered Saturday to honor Eric Garner a year after his death and to demand that the police officers involved be prosecuted.
Friday marked one year since Eric Garner died after an officer put him in an apparent chokehold while trying to arrest him for selling illegal cigarettes in Staten Island. On Monday, Garner's family reached a $5.9 million settlement with the city.
"I have my good days, and I have my bad days, but at the end of the day I still fight for justice," said Garner's daughter, Emerald Garner. "That's what gives me my strength to get out the bed."
Protesters joined rallies throughout the day at Cadman Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn. Garner's widow, Esaw Snipes Garner, joined them in demanding that federal charges be brought against NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who put Garner in the apparent chokehold.
"The police are out of hand," said Marvin Knight, of Brooklyn. "They're supposed to be serving us, not killing us."
Last December, a grand jury decided not to indict Officer Pantaleo. The medical examiner had ruled Garner's death a homicide.
The NYPD has said that it is conducting its own investigation into Garner's death.
