Renovations underway for home of slain NYPD detective
Renovation plans have been revealed for the Brooklyn home of a slain NYPD detective.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation will remodel Detective Wenjian Liu's home in Gravesend for his family. The house will get a new roof and windows, landscaping and new air conditioning, among other improvements.
Tunnels to Towers says the work is possible because of the public's generosity in making donations following the fatal daytime ambush shooting of Liu and his partner, Detective Rafael Ramos, in Bedford-Stuyvesant in late December. The foundation received more than $1 million in contributions from around the world to pay off mortgages and renovate the homes of both men.
Since about $800,000 was needed to pay off the mortgages, the rest of the funds will go toward necessary repairs.
Liu's widow spoke on behalf of their family at a news conference before construction began, thanking everyone for their support. She also translated for Liu's father, who said in part, "If there is a place to call home, there is a life to have happiness."
Renovation work will begin at Liu's over next few days. Ramos' home will be renovated in the coming months.
Tuesday would have marked Liu's 33rd birthday.
