Repairs complete on NYCHA house sidewalk
After over 40 years of living with a sidewalk that was falling apart, residents of the Parkside Houses finally feel safe again.
NYCHA and the Department of Transportation unveiled the newly repaired sidewalk in front of the houses on Tuesday.
"It had become a real safety issue for the folks who live here," said Poll Trottenberg, DOT vice president.
The DOT said the repairs are only the beginning, thanks to an increase in the DOT's budget specifically for fixing sidewalks.
"We have been able to complete $2.6 million in sidewalk repairs and we have another $2.2 million scheduled to improve curve ramps and other accessibility features, so this will be our biggest year ever," Trottenberg said.
Much-needed work at the Glenwood, Jefferson, Historia and Throgs Neck houses is already complete. The next locations to be repaired are the Melrose and Murphy houses.
Officials said it cost $132,000 to repair the sidewalk. They said their extra funding will help expedite upcoming projects and make more changes around the Bronx.
