Residents call for traffic changes around Times Plaza
Brooklyn street safety activists are asking the city to deliver on promised improvements to what they call one of the most dangerous intersections in the borough.
The intersection at Atlantic, Flatbush and Fourth avenues is listed as one of the most accident-prone in the city, according to an NYPD motor vehicle collisions report.
This year alone, the NYPD says that three people died along the Atlantic Avenue intersection, and that there were more than 900 collisions.
The city's Department of Transportation this summer proposed a variety of safety changes as a part of the citywide Vision Zero initiative. The plan included sidewalk extensions to reduce pedestrian crossing times, building center medians to streamline traffic and enhancing bike connections.
The DOT says it is working with local elected officials and stakeholders, who support the plan, to ensure that it is completed in a timely fashion.
