Residents of Pelham Parkway are calling for a safer Boston Road.
City-wide organization Transportation Alternatives says that the road’s current design encourages speeding and makes traveling a safety hazard for pedestrians and cyclists.
According to the organization, over 700 people were injured on Boston Road between 2012 and 2017. They say they believe these injuries are due to poor infrastructure.
“We need to have a comprehensive plan to make Boston Road safer for drivers pedestrians and  bicyclists,” says Raphael Schweizer of the Bronx Park East Community Association.

A representative from Transportation Alternatives says that the area has become popular for residents to walk around, given its several bus stops, train station and blocks of businesses. But the area has few pedestrian-friendly crosswalks and bike lanes.
He says that drivers are also known to speed in the area, making it especially dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.
The Department of Transportation has previously told News 12 The Bronx that they have a plan in place to implement new crossings, calm traffic and reduce speeding. Along some intersections, they have also installed curb extensions for people to wait for the buses and cross the street in a safer zone.
Transportation Alternatives has since developed the #SaferBostonRoad campaign and petition to bring awareness to the issue.
Representatives of the organization say they are dedicated to making the streets safer for all.
