Advisors from the city Department of Small Business Services visited owners in Kingsbridge Wednesday to offer advice on how they can remain in compliance with city and state laws.
Lynnette Tossas took over Milan Nail Salon on West 231st Street less than a year ago. Thanks to a visit from a consultant with the city's Small Business Services, Tossas learned about regulations she didn't know she wasn't in compliance with. The ventilation, store sign and backflow were all in violation.
Advisors say lack of ventilation in nail salons is a big issue some owners don't know about. They say signage outside the store and not having prices clearly listed are also common issues.
Tossas has five years to get her salon up to the city's standard.
Jennifer Sproull, who works with the Kingsbridge Business Improvement District, says owners are sometimes worried about having someone from a city agency in their store. Sproull says they shouldn't be afraid because the free service provided by the Department of Small Business Services can help businesses thrive and save money in violations.
New business owners can request an appointment on the department's website. Owners who had a visit today say the lessons they've learned have been invaluable.
