The bitter cold combined with the fluffy snow made for dangerous conditions on roads across Long Island Friday night.
Suffolk Highway Patrol encouraged drivers to go slow and steady.
"The reality is people just have to be cognizant of what's going on around them. It's going to be a brief storm but the roads may be treacherous tonight in some places," said Lt. J.P. Kosciuk.
Drivers agreed.
"They're pretty rough," Queens resident Nick Cooper said of the roads. "I mean, it's hard to see the lines right now. I definitely would say try to go 20, 30 (mph) under. I've seen some people already get stuck from not having snow tires."
The latest round of snow came as many Long Islanders were trying to get their holiday shopping done. They braved the snow-covered streets to buy food for holiday parties and presents for the kids.
"Ain't no weather going to stop me from doing nothing," declared Julie Bonessi, of East Islip.
But that didn't change the reality on the roads -- ice, snow, low visibility and bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Forecasts showed temperatures would plummet steeply overnight, prompting experts to warn drivers to go slow and be careful of ice.
