Students with visual impairments celebrate 'White Cane Day'
Dozens of visually impaired students from the New York Institute for Special Education marched down Pelham Parkway Monday to celebrate White Cane Day.
"White canes are the door to independence for people who are blind and visually impaired," says teacher Lis Geoghegan.
Students sang songs and held posters. Geoghegan says the day is much more than an excuse to get out of the classroom.
"We like to celebrate the freedom our children get from using the cane," she says. "They're not just talking about using canes, they're actually using them."
Later in the day, middle and high school students participated in a sound-themed scavenger hunt. They sought out sounds like sirens and honking cars.
The annual event has been recognized since 1964.
