Teen charged in murder of delivery driver in East Orange
Police have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with the deadly shooting of a Chinese food delivery driver in East Orange April 2.
Family members of the victim say that Karamoko Fatiga was a delivery worker for Golden Garden for almost 20 years. Prosecutors say that the teen shot Fatiga and robbed him while he was making a delivery on Shepard Avenue.
The teen, whose name was not released due to his age, previously lived in East Orange. He was charged with felony murder.
East Orange Mayor Ted Green praised law enforcement officers for solving the case.
“They pulled their resources together and did everything they had to do in terms of their intelligence. They did an excellent job,” he said.
"Wherever it is that you think that you can commit a crime, just know that some way we will be able to find you,” said Public Safety Director Sheilah Coley.
Fatiga leaves behind a wife and children. Loved ones say that he was devoted to his religion and made monthly donations to his mosque. They say that he made one just a half-hour before he died.
“Anytime you see him, you see happiness. He was happy,” says family spokesman Imam Souleimane Konaté.
The family says that they would like to see the teen tried as an adult. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has not said if they will seek to try the teen as an adult.
