A judge denied bail for a Brooklyn teen accused of dragging an NYPD officer more than two blocks with a car down an East Flatbush street.
Justin Murrell, 15, faces charges of attempted murder and assault in the June 3 incident. Prosecutors have chosen to charge him as an adult despite his age.
The teen spent weeks in a hospital after being shot during the incident
"I believe the bullet entered through his mouth and lodged in his jaw, and that the doctors at Brookdale Hospital removed the bullet from his jaw," says defense attorney Frederick Pratt.
Prosecutors say Officer Dalsh Veve, 35, remains in a coma at Kings County Hospital with catastrophic head and brain injuries. He is a nine-year veteran of the force.
Police say Veve and other plainclothes officers responded to a call of shots fired at a party on Tilden Avenue near East 53th Street just before midnight Saturday. When they arrived, police say the officers determined the noise was actually from fireworks.
But Veve noticed an illegally parked car at the scene, and he approached it. Police say the driver took off, accelerating up to 56 mph with Veve hanging out of the window.
Pratt says his client had no intention of harming the officer. The Police Benevolent Association released a statement calling the suspect a "dirtbag."
Veve fired two gunshots and struck the teen in the face before the car crashed, the officer fell free and the wounded teen fled. Surveillance video shows Veve bouncing off the street behind the car as it slams into another vehicle on East 53rd Street.
Police also charged two women who were passengers in the car, Eboni Clinton, 19, and Jeronda Oliver, 18, with hindering their investigation.
