Anti-gun violence activists united Sunday at town hall events across the country hoping to meet with politicians who can make a change.
The nationwide event comes just two weeks after the “March For Our Lives” rally in Washington D.C.
News 12 Brooklyn’s Emily Lorsche met with activists at a “Town Hall For Our Lives” at MCU Park in Coney Island, where Rep. Hakeem Jeffries promised to host discussions about ways the community can resolve what they say is a gun violence epidemic.
Wanda Feliciano tells News 12 she is participating in the town hall for her daughter Cheyenne, who was shot in the face by a friend playing with guns at just 14 years old.
“I am hoping that she would be proud of me to knowing that her death wasn't in vain,” she said.
Students say they are calling on every member of the House of Representatives to host a town hall.
Activists in attendance say they plan to go to Washington next week to demand votes on universal background checks and raising the age of purchase from 18 to 21. They say they will continue to fight until real change is made.
“The nation has risen up in such a phenomenal way to confront the challenges related to the gun culture in America,” said Jeffries. “The Coney Island community is rising up and has been doing so over the last several years.”
News 12 is told Coney Island was selected as the location for the town hall because the neighborhood has come so far combatting crime and gun violence in recent years
