Young women in the Bronx took the lead in a walk against human sex trafficking Saturday.
Organizers say the goal of the walk is to speak for the victims who can no longer speak for themselves.
Dozens of community members of all ages marched through the street chanting anti-sex trafficking messages.
Many of the participants wore pink and purple as a sign of solidarity and held signs promoting awareness about sex trafficking.
Supporters also sprinkled red sand in between cracks in the sidewalk to symbolize that they will not let another girl slip through the cracks.
"These girls are being coerced, they're being snatched, they're being tricked, and they are being sold into slavery. So, we are dealing with modern-day slavery times," says walk organizer Pamela Damon.
Organizers say an event like this is especially important after 19-year-old Corinna Slusser from Pennsylvania was lured to the Bronx, according to her family. Investigators believe she may have become part of a sex-trafficking ring.
According to a 2017 report from the International Labor Organization and Walk Free Organization, an estimated 24.9 million victims are trapped in modern-day slavery, with 4.8 million of those people sexually exploited.
Organizers tell News 12 one of the participants of Saturday's event was a victim of sexual violence.
