A 16-year-old died on Tuesday after a collision with a box truck while riding his e-scooter in Kensington.
The crash, which took place on Coney Island Avenue and 18th Street marked the 12th fatal incident in the city this year, according to city officials.
The busy intersection has drawn attention to the Department of Transportation in the past.
In 2017, the DOT included the area in its map, listing the intersection as a "Priority Bicycle District," due to the high number of bike riders who have been killed or severely injured.
They have passed plans to build bike lanes on surrounding streets, but not specifically that intersection, which has seen 69 injuries between 2017 and July of this year, per city data.
As shown in surveillance video, the scooter and box truck collided while turning right at the intersection. Neighbors who News 12 has spoken to say they are horrified, but say they are not surprised.
They say the intersection is always busy, and both drivers and cyclists do not obey the rules of the road. They say many don't even know what the rules are.
Representatives from Transportation Alternatives are pushing for the DOT to construct bike lanes in the exact location of the crash.
The DOT told News 12 that it has other plans for construction and would look into the possibility at this intersection, once the other plans are completed.
A motorist who News 12 spoke to said they were on the opposing side. He said bike lanes can often lead to more congestion on the roads and do not help enough to make the construction worth it.
Police say a 48-year-old driver of the truck remained on scene and is being questioned.
No arrests have been made at this time, and no charges have been made against the driver.
