Two Rikers Island corrections officers from The Bronx were sentenced yesterday for hitting an inmate and lying to cover it up.
Both lost their jobs and were ordered to pay fines and serve community service for the 2006 incident. Prosecutors say Capt. Sherman Graham hit an inmate at the prison during a training session for recruits, then told the rookies to lie about what happened and say the inmate hit him first. His supervisor, former assistant warden Gail Lewis, was convicted of helping him file a false report. Both were found guilty in May. They will each have to pay $1,000 in fines and serve at least 500 hours of community service.
