Two federal grants have been awarded to preserve the history of local and global hip hop at the Universal Hip Hop Museum currently under construction in the Bronx.

Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, Rep. Jamaal Bowman and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer were able to allocate $18.2 million for the Bronx and give $5 million of that grant to the Universal Hip Hop Museum.

The museum will offer programs for students K-12.

Dozens of elected officials gathered on Sunday to announce the awarded funds. Speakers acknowledged the fact that the Bronx is the birthplace of hip hop and say this new museum is essential for the community.

"There was no other place in the world to put this museum but here in our very own Bronx," said Sen. Gillibrand.

The money will be used for construction of the building and its programs. It is expected to be open in late 2024.
