Federal officials announced major funding and upgrades are coming to Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand say they and Sen. Chuck Schumer secured $3 million for the hospital thanks to a new government funding agreement.

The money is expected to go toward finishing the expansion and upgrading of the emergency room, which hospital officials describe as too small, too crowded and too old.

The plan starts with a modern makeover design to help improve the flow of staff and patients. The hospital also plans to add more holding areas and nursing stations as well as increasing privacy for the 40,000 people a year seen in the emergency room.

Once the project is complete, the hospital hopes to increase that capacity and be able to serve even more people in a fully modern facility

Officials say the full renovation and expansion should be done by the end of 2024.
